This earthquake swarm started with a magnitude 5.5 earthquake on 26 April 2019. These events are associated with the ongoing subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate along the Philippine Trench.

Phivolcs said the earthquakes were generated by the ongoing subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate along the Philippine Trench.

At this stage, Phivolcs warned that the current earthquake activity may indicate two scenarios: first, it may continue with its present activity and eventually wane in the next few days, or second, it may culminate to a larger earthquake.

Today there was a M4.4 earthquake, May 2, 2019. It had a depth of 113.6km.

On April 24 there was a M6.4 earthquake, it had a depth of 54km, 17 people died with many injured.

On April 23, there was a M6.1 earthquake.

Earlier, Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum said the trenches offshore Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur have the capacity to generate a magnitude 8 earthquake.

“People in the area should take preparedness measures, and be guided by verified information,” Phivolcs advised.

According to NFA, a survival kit should be stocked with the following items: bottled water, non-perishable food, ID document copies (i.e. ID card and National Insurance Card), cash, first aid kit, personal medications, work gloves, flashlight, whistle, radio, clothes to keep you warm, small blanket, lightweight raincoat, hand warmer, tissue paper, towel, mask, stationery (notebook and pen), backup keys, and Swiss knife.

For households with infants, ensure supplies such as infant formula, bottles, and diapers are included on the checklist.

As a reminder, Taipei City Government called upon the public to follow a few safety instructions in the wake of a major earthquake. People should watch out for any signs of irregularity on the exterior of buildings and inspect if there is any crack appearing on the walls, pillars, and beams in their home.

Residents are also recommended to look out for gas leak signs, and should it happen, open windows and leave the house immediately while notifying gas companies to conduct a thorough examination.
