April 12, 2019– Mary Greeley News – A 5-year-old child was thrown from the third floor level at Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., on Friday morning, and a suspect is in custody, police said.
Witnesses told police a woman was screaming that someone threw her child over the balcony after 10 a.m. Photos from the scene showed emergency crews tending to the child.
Brian Johnson, a Minneapolis resident, told the Daily News he didn’t see the incident, but was there less than a minute after to witness the aftermath.
He said the child was lying “motionless, he was in a pool of blood.”
The Bloomington Police Department is investigating the incident and confirmed that the child is 5 years old.
Aranda was arrested following the 10 a.m. incident that left the victim with life-threatening injuries.
Police say that there is no apparent connection between the suspect and the victim or the victim’s family.
Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts, speaking at a press conference outside the mall, said a 24-year-old man — identified as Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda — is in custody. He was charged Friday with attempted homicide.
“Our officers initially responded and performed first aid on the child along with some other witnesses and passersby,” Potts said. “The child did suffer significant injuries.”
Allina Health EMS responded to the call and transported the victim to the Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, a spokesperson confirmed.
Potts said the mother is with her child at the hospital.
Potts said the suspect was apprehended inside the mall shortly after the incident and is currently at the Bloomington Police Department. It’s believed to be an isolated incident and authorities don’t believe there is any relationship between the suspect and the child or family.
