Jan. 2, 2019– Mary Greeley News – A piece of a building on Dakota Avenue about a block west of Pierre Street has fallen off.
About eight feet of brick work attached to the building at 125 West Dakota Avenue fell off and landed on the sidewalk and on Dakota Avenue itself a little before 11 a.m. today Dec. 31, 2018. The building houses the United Sioux Tribes, Monroe Chiropractic and the Lakota Language Consortium.
Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul, who was at the scene, said city crews and police would be closing the sidewalk in front of the building while inspections were conducted. Brick continued to fall from the building while he spoke with a Capital Journal reporter.
A structural engineer will conduct an assessment to determine the integrity of the building. Bohnenkamp said she doesn’t know the cause of the damage.
The material fell off the front of the building, near where the building connected to another building. The second floor is rental housing, but renters were not in the building at the time. The first floor was vacant, previously occupied by the United Sioux Tribes office.
