Major earthquake ROCKS Osaka in Japan

A MAGNITUDE 5.3 earthquake has rocked the Osaka region of southern Japan at 7.58 JST (11.58 BST) on Monday morning, striking at a depth of 15km.

Update: Japan’s national broadcaster NHK reported that at least 350 people were wounded by the quake, but authorities were still saying 307 by Monday evening, local time.

A man in his 80s died in the collapse of another concrete wall in Osaka city. An 84-year-old man in nearby Ibaraki died after a bookshelf fell on top of him at home, according to city officials.

The morning commute was disrupted, as dozens of domestic flights in and out of Osaka were grounded, while train and subway service in the Osaka area including the bullet train were suspended to check for damage. Passengers were seen exiting trains on the tracks between stations.

BBC News also notes that several key industrial areas near Osaka were affected. Companies like Panasonic and Daihatsu are suspending production at their affected sites.

No tsunami warning had been issued.

Strong shaking was felt throughout Osaka, Kyoto, Shiga and Nara.

NHK and TV Asahi both report “several” deaths, and Kyodo news agency has stated a nine-year-old girl was trapped and killed by a damaged wall in a swimming facility north of Osaka city.

Many people were trapped in elevators and had to be rescued. Also, many of the city’s main water lives broke flooding streets, one shooting several hundred feet into the air.

Japanese Self-Defense Force fighter jets and helicopters have been sent to the area to monitor the situation.

The earthquake was reported as a M6.1 but downgraded to a M5.3 by USGS.

One social media user named Ted Dintersmith, said: “Major earthquake here in Japan.

“Wow! The entire room shook like a Disney ride.”

Light damage has been reported at Ibaraki station of Hankyu Dentetsu, where the train boards appear to have fallen from the roof.

All 15 nuclear reactors are still functioning.

Most of the trains in the Osaka region have been shut down for inspections, bringing the whole region to a standstill during Monday morning rush hour.

Another social media user named Steve McCarty commented on the situation, stating: “What’s happening?! A magnitude 5.9 earthquake right here in northern Osaka prefecture.

Three people have been reported killed including a 9-year-old girl and 51 people injured.

There was also a report of a partial building collapses as well as another building caught fire burning it’s entire roof.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck around 8 a.m. about 6 miles underground, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The strongest shaking was in an area north of Osaka city, the agency said.
