Vietnamese kidnapping included stop at embassy in Berlin - prosecutor

BERLIN (Reuters) – German federal prosecutors said they had assumed control of an investigation of the alleged kidnapping of a Vietnamese businessman and his companion, given new evidence that the two were likely taken to the Vietnamese embassy in Berlin en route to Vietnam.

The chief federal prosecutor’s office said on Thursday that the investigation was focussed on suspicion of foreign intelligence activity and unlawful deprivation of liberty. The probe had previously been under the control of state prosecutors in Berlin.

It said Vietnam had now withdrawn its extradition request for Trinh Xuan Thanh, who was seeking asylum in Germany but is wanted in the southeast Asian country on charges of financial mismanagement.

Germany on Thursday said it was considering what steps to take after Vietnam failed to honour its demand for the man’s return.
